What do Women Want? (if you’re a divorced woman and want to go on holiday!)

A dear friend and I were chatting over lunch about holidays we had taken over the past few years with our husbands; where we travelled to and what we liked doing. But it occurred to us (in a hideous moment) that we are now both recently divorced and suddenly everything has changed. We don’t have the instant holiday companion to accompany us to far flung destinations anymore. There isn’t someone there to get us out of a sticky situation. Or help carry all the luggage!!! (And believe me, I always tend to overpack!!)

There are all sorts of things we now need to think about. For a start, who can we go on holiday with? Which country is safe? Will we be bored going on our own? Will anyone talk to us? Will it be embarrassing eating at a table for 1?

To answer the question of travelling with a companion, for me, being freelance, it’s pretty difficult to just summon up a friend who happens to be available on the precise days off in between jobs that I might have to go away. If you’re like me, or you have kids at school, or a job that is difficult when it comes to taking leave, you will probably have to go on your own.

But does being a single traveller fill you with dread?

Well I’m here to say, it shouldn’t. Travelling on your own is an utterly amazing experience. You can be as selfish as you want to be without it affecting anyone else. You can do whatever you want to do and whenever you want to do it. It’s freeing! It’s inspirational. It’s exciting! You meet fabulous people, far more than you ever would going as a couple. You get to see the places you want to go to and do all the things you want to do without having to ask for anyone else’s permission.

I first went travelling on my own at the age of 26….now 24 years down the line I’m about to do it again. And I can’t wait!

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to show you some places where you can go on holiday which are safe, amazing and full of adventure. You will meet all sorts of people on your travels and the world will be reopened for you as an emancipated divorcee!
